»QualiStruk3D« research project
Micro-structured molds for plastic injection molding
From car dashboards to switch elements – a large number and wide range of products are made of plastic, particularly in the automotive industry. With increased product variety come increased standards in terms of product quality, as the final customer demands higher quality surfaces and attractive designs. In order to manufacture tools with complex structures faster, more cost-effectively and reproducibly, the Fraunhofer IPT has developed the technique of laser structuring.

Cooperation between research and industry
Fraunhofer IPT wants to hear about steel polishing experiences
In Cooperation with the Swedish Halmstad University and the steel manufacturer Uddeholm Tooling AB, the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT is planning a new initiative on the subject of “polishing”. The aim of this work between industry and research institutes is to encourage the intense exchange of experiences in order to lead, for example, to the definition of surface quality standards, the testing of new measuring systems and the improvement of polishing techniques. Interested companies and scientists who are involved in steel polishing are welcome to join in the discussion.

Hannover Industrial Trade Fair 2008
MiniMill – High precision compact milling machine for tool and die making
From April 21 to 25, 2008, the Fraunhofer Institute for Pro-duction Technology IPT will be presenting the current high-light of its research and development work at the joint IVAM Microtechnology Network stand at the Hannover Industrial Trade Fair 2008.
At stand F16 in hall 6, the Fraunhofer IPT will be demon-strating a compact, highly dynamic and ultra precise milling machine with linear direct drives in all machine axes that only takes up a single square meter. MiniMill is so precise owing to the design improvements made to standard com-ponents. This innovative machine can be used to process work pieces with a precision in the single-figure micrometer range.
